Hardware Engineer - Team Lead

We are actively seeking an experienced Engineer to lead our Mechanical and Wiring Engineering department.

  • Act as subject matter expert for mechanical and wiring design and integration.
    • Sensor mounting elements which provide proper stability, protection, and field-of-view.
    • Mechanisms, sensors, bracketry and hardware to convert traditionally controlled vehicles to drive-by-wire control.
    • Electronics enclosures to protect sensitive PCB assemblies.
    • Electrical component thermal analysis and design in an automotive or heavy equipment environment.
    • Understanding of automotive harness wiring requirements and practices.
  • Work within interdisciplinary teams to provide the best solution in the fewest iterations.
  • Analyze designs for safety, feasibility, robustness and ease-of-use.
  • Oversee engineer/supplier interaction to procure and properly specify commercial-off-the-shelf components.
  • Review design documentation and manufacturing drawings for in-house and supplier fabrication. 
  • Guide resource management of your team to appropriately provide resources for project teams.
  • Perform reviews of your team members.
  • Coordinate work with interdisciplinary engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Facilitate and participate in technical design reviews.
  • Occasional travel expected, mostly domestic with a possibly of international travel.

Required Competencies 
  • 8+ years of related experience and training required
  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering
  • Focus on the large picture, but able to zoom into the details when necessary
  • Desire to continually improve Torc’s processes and capabilities
  • Demonstrated experience with SolidWorks and/or Zuken E3 Wiring Software
  • Willingness to travel
  • Proficiency with MS Office
  • Excellent technical documentation skills (presentations, design reviews, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings)
  • Ability to interface with customers and suppliers
  • Motivated self-starter who is detail-oriented, organized and has excellent communication skills
  • Experience in the following areas is desired: 
    • Mechatronics or Robotics 
    • Designing for: sheet metal, machining, rapid prototyping, injection molding 
    • Direct experience with fabrication equipment
    • Design of automotive and/or military vehicle style wiring harnesses
    • Experience working in the automotive industry
    • High mechanical aptitude 
    • Previous hydraulic design experience
    • Understanding of material mechanics (stress, strain, fatigue)
    • Understanding of FEA simulation and results analysis
    • Heavy-machine design experience
  • Experience with new product introduction
    • Designing manufacturable products
    • Prototyping methods
    • Production documentation
    • Evaluating capability of potential suppliers
